Surgical Pathology Fellowship

Program Description

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Brody School of Medicine offers a one-year, post-residency fellowship in surgical pathology. The fellowship is for board-eligible or board-certified anatomic pathologists desiring experience in diagnostic surgical pathology and the opportunity to sign out cases independently. Broad training in all aspects of surgical pathology including dermatopathology, hematopathology, breast pathology, gynecological pathology, renal pathology, neuropathology and pediatric pathology is provided as well as experience in immunofluorescence microscopy, electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry. The Surgical Pathology division accessions over 20,000 cases per year and represent a broad spectrum of pathology. Service responsibilities include case diagnosis, case reporting, outside case review, and case presentation at multidisciplinary conferences. At first, the fellow’s service work is supervised, and his/her diagnosis are finalized by faculty. Later, at the discretion of the Residency Program Director, the fellow may be credentialed to allow independent sign out cases independently and are appointed as faculty instructors. In addition to these service responsibilities, opportunities are available for participation and/or presentation at department conferences and didactic sessions, as well as slide-based teaching of medical students and residents.

Requirements

Applicants must possess an M.D. or D.O. degree and must have completed the pathology residency requirements. Full licensure to practice medicine in North Carolina is required.

Stipends

The stipend is that of a comparable year resident at ECU Health Medical Center and competitive with others in the region.
