Residency – Goals & Philosophy

The anatomic and clinical pathology residency program at ECU Health/East Carolina University seeks to equip our residents with the clinical knowledge, technical skills, and managerial and administrative expertise needed to handle the medical and administrative aspects of a pathology laboratory. With the guidance and supervision of the department’s faculty and the staff, residents gradually assume greater responsibility for the daily functions of the pathology service. Through formal education, experience and research, our residents acquire the skills necessary to confidently and competently assume the responsibilities of fellowship and practice at the completion of residency.

The training program strives to provide our pathology residents with the appropriately supportive learning environment to master all required competencies, to adequately prepare the resident to become certified by the American Board of Pathology, and to subsequently achieve success in a career in pathology. Emphasis is placed on understanding and embracing the pathologist’s role as a partner to our clinician colleagues, focused on providing excellent care to our shared patients. Our graduates pursue interests in a broad spectrum of pathology specialties and practice in a variety of settings, including academic departments, community hospitals, independent laboratories and industry.
